'Core Python Programming' by Wesley Chun was one book that I used to learn Python initially. The author was involved with egroups, which later became Yahoo groups - he does indicate that Python was the language used to develop egroups. Looks like Yahoo still has not changed that. With delicious.com they spent 3 disastrous years rewriting it in PHP (from Perl, iirc).

I believe Yahoo Groups was based on egroups which was written in python.
